About Monterey

We recommend that you plan to stay over a day or two to see some of the local sites. For instance:

SEE THE JELLIES: If you're in Monterey for the first time, you absolutely cannot go home without seeing the jellies at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They are nothing less than spectacular. There are dozens of different kinds--from tiny marble-size gizmos to pulsating blobs the size of dinner plates. Bring your camera as they are displayed under lights that makes them as bright and colorful as a de Kooning painting. The aquarium is also known for its ever-cute sea otters, some of whose cousins you can spot if you hang off the hotel balcony early in the morning.
KAYAK THE BAY: If you like your wildlife up close and personal, plan to kayak in Monterey Bay. You can rent single- and double-seaters from a little outfit directly across from the hotel, and launch on the hotel's beach. Paddle over to the wharf, and you will be rewarded with a performance by a most playful colony of gregarious sea lions. They come up close to check you out, and frolic all around your boat. For sure, they will! You can do your paddling solo, or you can join a group led by a seasoned kayaker. The best!

TAKE THE TOUR: Film buffs should check out the Monterey Movie Tours -- a bus ride around the region complete with personal DVD players so you can sync up the actual landscape with its celluloid twin. Many people don't know that Monterey has long been a prime location for filmmakers, with more than 238 movies made to date. Among them: Play for Misty for Me, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, National Velvet, East of Eden, and From Here to Eternity. Hitchcock favored the region and shot scenes here for Vertigo and Rebecca, among others.

GOLF: Did we mention Pebble Beach is right down the road?

AND FOR THE UBER JOCKS AMONG US: There's a wonderful jogging/biking path right outside our hotel that runs from Monterey to Pacific Grove--several miles--along the most beautiful coastline you've ever seen. Bring your running shoes.

SHOPPING! There are many shopping opportunities in Monterey. including a scrumptious Ghirardelli Chocolate shop within walking distance of the workshop. Also, a short drive from Monterey is the charming little town of Carmel, should you want to purchase a Picasso, a Blue Dog, or perhaps a Thomas Kinkade.

Course Announcements--and Your First Assignments

November 25: Okay, tomorrow is the day that we have the drawing for the Apple iTouch. So if you haven't yet filled out the evaluation survey, do it TODAY! It's on the wiki. Thanks much.
------------

November 24: Hey everybody! We see that you're trying to get to the wiki by using your personal name. When you do that, we have to approve each of you, which takes time because we have to look up your email to make sure we know you.

It's a lot easier to use the generic password we set up for everyone. It's in your binder, under the Welcome tab, on the second page.
------------

November 18: Many handouts for yesterday's and today's sessions are now up on the wiki.
- From yesterday: Kevin McKean on user-generated content, Sean Nolan and Molly Wood on video, Sabina Shnapek on mobile, Susan West and Michael Gold on 10 mistakes Web sites make.
- For today: Shari Cleary on Web analytics, Cody Simms on broadcasting your brand, and Kent Anerson on metadata and remixing content.
------------

November 16: For session handouts, the evaluation survey, and a Web publishing glossary, please visit the conference wiki.

Remember to use the generic username and password we announce at the workshop so that you don't have to wait for us to approve your membership.
------------

November 12: POW is using Twitter--are you? Please join our team reporting exercise and follow the official conference Twitter. NOTE: If you want to participate in this activity during the Workshop, don't forget your laptop.
------------

November 7: We've locked up the wiki so that we can begin posting faculty handouts on it. When you get to Monterey, we'll give you your username and password so that you can access it again. Thanks for your patience.
------------

November 6: We've sent you information on your Site Critique Group along with a short advance assignment. If you haven't seen yours, please check your spam box or email us at publishing.courses@stanford.edu. (You can also view a copy of the advance assignment here.) See you soon.
------------

October 23: We just put up a wiki where we'll be posting speaker presentations and handouts during the Workshop. Check it out.

There's also a Glossary of terms which we'd like you to help build out. Please either add a term that you'd like glossed, or share your expertise and add a definition. It doesn't have to be dictionary-perfect! Just explain the term in your own words.

Why are we doing this? In part, we want everyone in the Workshop to have first-hand experience in using these tools. So get your fingers dirty!
------------

Early October: Welcome! We're glad you're here and we look forward to meeting you in Monterey.

We'll be posting information for you about the upcoming workshop in this space.

For now, please go to My Page and fill in your Profile to create an introduction for others. (If you listed your title and company under "city and state" when you originally registered on this site, please go to "My Settings/My Details" and revise--we fixed the glitch.) Thanks!
